Ms. Katz’s Public Speaking class at Rutherford High School had the opportunity to attend an engaging presentation titled “Public Speaking in the Real World: How Communication Shapes My Career,” held in the Rutherford High School Library. The event featured four accomplished speakers who shared how effective communication and public speaking play a vital role in their professional lives.
One speaker joined via video from Ohio: Andrew Katz, an attorney for Amazon and Ms. Katz’s brother, who discussed the importance of clear, persuasive communication in the legal field. The three in-person speakers were Barbara Worton, a professional writer; Laura Iacometta, a member of the military, registered nurse, and owner of a theatre company; and Joan Katz, a registered dietitian and Ms. Katz’s mother. Each speaker offered unique insights into how public speaking is used in their respective careers, emphasizing that strong communication skills are essential across all professions.
The presentation concluded with an enthusiastic Q&A session, during which students eagerly asked thoughtful questions and engaged directly with the speakers. The event was a meaningful and enriching experience that helped students connect classroom learning to real-world applications, making it an excellent teaching and learning experience for everyone involved.
