It is required for all students to take one year of world language in order to graduate. French and Spanish electives are extremely popular at Rutherford High School, and two thirds of our students continue on with their language learning including honors and AP level courses. The main objective of the World Language Department is to enable students to attain a measurable degree of communicative competency and proficiency in each of the four language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Grammar and vocabulary are logically sequenced and grouped to make their acquisition as natural as possible. The teaching of culture is an integral part of the Spanish and French programs, to increase the cultural awareness of our students and have them make connections through world languages to other disciplines. Course curriculum is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. Our language programs aim to help students develop skills that will help them navigate through the challenges of the 21st Century and function in our global society.
