In honor of 9/11, our 6th grade students participated in a moving lesson centered on selflessness, courage, and remembrance. In their Social Studies classes, they watched the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary short featuring the incredible story of Welles Crowther, known to many as "The Man in the Red Bandana." How do we learn about people who lived long before us? In this lesson, students explored the important role archaeology plays in helping us understand the past. After learning about archaeologists and the study of human history, students took on the role of archaeologists themselves through a hands-on “Cookie Excavation” activity. Using toothpicks as their excavation tools, students carefully mapped and excavated chocolate chips from cookies, treating each “artifact” as evidence from an archaeological site. Students from Mrs. Mirkovich and Ms. Levine’s ELA classes participated in a Book Tasting, allowing students to explore a variety of text types and genres. Throughout the lesson, students previewed multiple books and discovered titles and topics that sparked their interests. As they sampled each book, students reflected on their reading preferences by completing a brochure in which they rated and shared their thoughts about each title. We held our end of year PBSIS pep rally which included games, a student talent show, and teacher performance.  Winners, who demonstrated respect, responsibility, and self control all year,  were selected from each grade level to win the end of year prizes.  It was a great opportunity to be together as a school community to celebrate a great year!
