We have picture day scheduled for Wednesday, May 12th (Blue Cohort), and Thursday, May 13th (Bulldog Cohort). Picture Day is for seventh and eighth-grade students. In-person students will have their pictures taken in the morning. During this Month's Advisory, students discussed in their group the topic of Leadership. The seventh-grade advisory groups looked at Leadership styles. The discussion focused on the different ways a student can approach leadership opportunities, and students discussed how to be more open-minded to leadership styles that may differ from their own. Eighth-grade groups looked at Leadership from the viewpoint of how to be an everyday leader. In a special meeting of Advisory on March 26th, seventh and eighth-grade students at UMS investigated mindfulness as a technique to be used for alleviating stress. Along with their advisors, groups identified stress as a body’s reaction to a challenge or demand that might drive us to complete tasks, but that may also cause us frustration or tension. Students thought about personal stressors and ways they might be able to reduce the amount of stress in their lives through techniques such as visualization, meditation, journaling, breathing exercises, and games. Meet Mrs. Kim Fecanin Union Middle School nurse extraordinaire! Mrs. Fecanin is a natural and nursing has always been in her DNA. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, Mrs. Fecanin has been working countless hours helping students, parents, staff, and the community. February's topic of discussion was self-respect. Many students came to the conclusion that taking good care of oneself is an excellent way to practice self-respect. Students also discussed characteristics and traits they value in themselves and how self-respect is defined by a person's value system.
