Happy New Year! On Monday, January 4th, 2021, Union School will transition to a split session schedule. Split sessions will allow for an increase of 35% in-person instruction. As stated in our reopening plan, “The district’s core goal is to bring all students to school as much as possible while preserving the safety of all students and in the school environment.” Adopting this schedule allows us to meet this goal and maintain the high-quality instruction our students deserve during these challenging times. Advisory Notes – December 14th, 2020
Today in advisory we discussed diversity and the difference between acceptance and tolerance. Seventh grade students, through video, discussion, and songs, identified how we perceive bias and prejudice and the steps we can take to stop the cycle. Eighth grade students, through the presentation of two unique stories, learned that tolerating others is not a positive reaction to diversity. Meet Chris Viola!
Mr. Viola is a seasoned vet teaching science at Union Middle School for the past 20 years!! In addition to teaching 8th-grade science, Mr. Viola created and teaches the extremely popular Amusement Parks and Bridges elective. In this elective, students explore structures as they relate to amusement park rides and bridges. Our students explore the forces involved in physical science by researching, building, and measuring various amusement park rides (Ferris wheels, loops, and roller coasters). Today in advisory we talked about social media. Grade 7 focused on the risks and consequences of giving out personal information and posting pictures. Grade 8 students spoke about how often we use social media, what we are using it for, and how we can be safe on social media.
