Students in Mrs. Manocchio & Ms. Levine’s 6th grade language arts classes prepared for and participated in literature circle discussions surrounding their latest class novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry. All students came to the group’s discussion with specific jobs, including identifying and defining new vocabulary terms, describing and analyzing important characters, and asking “thick” questions regarding plot events. Other students drew upon their artistic talents and created illustrations of especially important moments to help their classmates better visualize the story. During these lively discussions, the students challenged themselves to ask questions, share ideas, and formulate predictions. Students expressed contrasting interpretations of plot events and character actions, all while utilizing reading strategies that we have been working on in our reading mini-lessons. A great learning experience was had by all!
