Mrs. Philp and Mrs. Smith’s fifth grade classes are “Choosing Kindness” as they explore the novel Wonder, through a novel study. Reading about a fifth grade boy with facial deformity who is going to attend school for the first time, the students see how people treat someone who is different, learning not to judge a boy by the way his face looks. Through partner reading, small group and whole group discussions, and independent responses and reflections, students are able to more deeply connect to the novel while exploring friendships, family, and why it is important to choose kindness.
