Fifth grade teachers and students at Pierrepont School look forward to the month of May. It is then that they continue on in their decade long tradition of observing the metamorphosis of the Painted Lady caterpillars into butterflies. Incorporating both language arts skills of writing butterfly poems during April’s poetry month and science on the life cycle of animals, students develop a sense of respect and understanding for these and other creatures of the Earth. Students spent two weeks observing and recording the metamorphosis, then finally release their butterflies in a ceremony of reading their butterfly poems and then letting them go on their way to enjoy the gardens of Rutherford.
