Students in the 5th Grade G&T classes worked to understand the challenges of establishing a lunar colony in this Project Based Learning Unit. Working closely as a team they explored the technological, societal and safety-related issues related to the habitation of the lunar surface. Using technology to research information about the moon, students completed engineering design journals in which they considered Energy, Transportation, Sustainability and Shelter Design. Then groups identified key structures for their lunar colony and started designing its layout and constructing a scale model. Finally, they had to design a survey that would gauge the impact of their lunar model and analyze societal views of moon exploration. The PBL culminated with group presentations in front of students and parents.
