Our young engineers put their problem-solving skills to the test during our “Build a Flashlight” STEM activity! Students explored how electrical energy travels through a circuit as they created mini flashlights using LEDs, button batteries, and aluminum foil. Along the way, they learned about the parts of a battery, discovered how circuits work, and saw firsthand why an on-off switch is so useful.
This hands-on project highlighted many of our PORG qualities. Students demonstrated critical thinking and perseverance as they worked through failed attempts and adjusted their designs to light their bulbs. When challenges arose, they relied on communication, collaboration, and citizenship skills to respectfully support one another and share solutions. By the end of the activity, every flashlight was shining—and so was our classroom community!
