Students and staff at Washington School celebrated their annual Discovery Day on Friday, March 23. The entire day is dedicated to one theme of study. This year’s theme was “Music”.
The day began with an all-school assembly featuring rock violinist, Geoffrey Castle. The student then rotated through theme-based stations during the day. They explored brass instruments with the help of a brass quintet. They learned about the mechanics of the voice in a workshop presented by RHS Music teacher, Mrs. Patricia Blanchard. Union School Music teacher, Mr. John Briganti, demonstrated how technology can be used to compose, record and create music. Art teacher, Mrs. Laura Clossey, helped the children to create their own rain sticks while learning about the science of sound. The day culminated with another all-school assembly provided by the Montclair State University West African Drumming and Dance Ensemble.
This PTA sponsored event was coordinated by Grade 3 teacher, Mrs. Sarah Kupryk. Mrs. Kupryk was assisted by Grade 3 colleague, Ms. Denys Gardeazabal, Grade 2 teacher, Ms. Amanda Kiley, Grade 1 teachers, Ms. Jennifer Krawiec and Ms. Amanda Onofrio, and reading teacher, Ms. Anne Hetzel.
