All the students in second grade participated in an election unit. Students selected two issues of interest: second snack and extra recess time. Students under the guidance of their teachers researched the issues noting positive and negatives of each issue. Students then wrote and presented persuasive speeches to their peers in an effort to gather votes for their given issue. Second graders even made posters and displayed them throughout the building to get some of the undecided voters to vote for their cause. Teachers then set up a polling site and students exercised their right to vote! Mr. Hurley and Dr. Velechko voted as well and hoped their votes did not cause a contested election. In the end SECOND SNACK was the winner! The real winners were the students who experienced democracy at work.
