Lincoln school has many important educational tasks, none more important than giving our students the opportunities to become life-long learners. Our comprehensive instructional programs, from preschool through third grade, focus on contemporary research, balanced instruction supported by adequate resources, interventions for children with special needs, and continual in-service training for teachers. These integrated programs reflect the best pedagogical approaches to instruction and are designed to meet the academic, social, physical, and emotional needs of our students.
In order to develop students’ skills across the disciplines, subject specialists work with students to meet district objectives. These include weekly art, vocal music, Spanish and library/media classes. First and second graders receive Enrichment classes to promote divergent thinking once a week and third graders receive Keyboarding class one day a week. Physical education is taught twice a week. A science specialist explores the Scientific Method through hands-on experiments with all K-3 classes and teachers supplement the Mystery Science program. We also utilize the envision Math program, Advancing Literacy program and Writer’s Workshop model. For those students with special needs, we have Reading Specialists, RTI instructors, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, ESL instructors, Gifted and Talented teachers, and special education teachers. A Student Assistance Counselor nurtures students’ social and emotional growth too.
Computers and technology extend into all areas of the curriculum through software programs and Internet access, which is available in every classroom. Teachers have classroom sets of Chromebooks to use in the classroom. In addition, we have installed interactive boards and document cameras to facilitate lessons. All teachers utilize Google Classroom to communicate with parents on classroom assignments and deliver lessons.
Our classrooms are inviting learning centers where children receive positive reinforcement for their accomplishments, both privately and publicly. Teachers differentiate lessons to reach students in their learning modality and plan thematic units to show the integration of all disciplines. The Lincoln teachers set high, but realistic expectations and consistently encourage children to attempt more challenging learning tasks.
An active PTA sponsors numerous cultural enrichment events with wonderful programs and field trips that complement our curriculum. School assemblies bring in authors, storytellers, theatrical performances, and specialists in many areas. There are also book fairs, reading programs, Halloween and Valentine Fun Nights, art shows, field days, and other programs designed to develop and nurture the whole child. Parents also attend district workshops to learn about the learning process and child safety. The PTA encourages community involvement and recognizes the importance of giving back to those in need.
As one enters Lincoln School, they immediately sense the warm and positive climate that permeates our halls and classrooms. The building hums with productive activity and evidence of the high value placed on children’s work and learning. It is also evident that we have made the critical connection between children’s academic and social needs and their need to feel safe, accepted and valued.
Lincoln School is a special place, where community, staff, and parents all work as one in order to lead each child through the lifelong journey we call learning.
