Dear Parents and Guardians,
Last year, we followed the journey of a china rabbit, Edward Tulane, as he learned to love others more than himself. This year we will learn about the world through the eyes of Humphrey, a lovable hamster whose adventures in the classroom and on weekend visits, give him a unique point of view on school and families.
Thanks to the joint funding of both the Washington and Lincoln School PTAs we will once again be able share a reading experience as a whole school. Every family and staff member will receive a copy of the book and be invited to read, The World According to Humphrey by Betty Birney, over the course of January. Activities at school will coordinate with the book, promote reading, and enrich the shared reading experience of all who participate.
For the next few weeks I will be asking parents or an adult family member to read a part of this book to their child (ren) at home and use the discussion prompts to guide their talk about this story with their child. Since Homework Now is a convenient medium I will post this guide weekly. On the back of this letter you will find the reading schedule. Please keep it close by and complete the suggested readings so your child can successfully participate in the activities at school. Each morning trivia questions about the reading will be asked during morning assembly, and during library class all the students will meet with their “book club” to complete activities or to discuss their thinking about this story. Although the program is voluntary I encourage all families to participate. By doing so you will be modeling good reading habits and showing the importance your family places on reading both for pleasure and learning.
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Van Es
