For the past two weeks second graders participated in an interdisciplinary unit on the election process. Students brainstormed issues facing them, selected the two most pressing issues (dance party and one week of no homework) and then ran campaigns to have their issue passed! On Monday the second grade teachers held a political rally where students persuaded the audience to support their cause. Students shared their research on the topic and their personal views and then tried to excite the audience to vote. Students were also instructed about listening to different view points and disagreeing respectfully.
The students went to the polls today to let their voices be heard! We had breaking news throughout the day with exit polls updates, voter turnout, and projections. At times throughout the day the race was too close to call and students had to wait anxiously for the results. Ms. DeBouter, Ms. LaSpisa, Ms. Atkachunas and Ms. Smith planned a memorable learning experience. Hopefully, there are no recounts and challenges after the election is decided .
