Give Kids a Smile Day, Friday, February 1, 2019, is a single day program in which free dental care/oral health services is provided to children ages 12 and younger who do not receive regular dental care, for whatever reason. Students Honor Dr. Martin Luther King
Dr. King's work was recognized across the grades. Many students studied Martin Luther King in their classroom. Students discussed what it meant to have a dream and talked about Dr. Martin Luther King's dream. Students had to decide what their dream would be. First graders brainstormed ways to make the world, school, or community a better place. Students listed topics such as stopping pollution and bullying, helping the homeless, and being fair. Improving Attendance
Research shows that students who have a large number of absences in the first few years of school are significantly more likely to be below grade level by the end of the third grade and also be behind their peers in social and emotional development as well. This gap continues to widen as the child continues in their school career. It is imperative that children are in school to collaborate and learn from their peers and teachers. Ms. Augusterfer designed an enrichment lesson to stretch the creative minds of the first graders. Students created an 'octobike' for spiders. Setting Goals
January and February are months of tremendous growth for most students. Parents may want to consider using the new year resolution time to have children select one or two goals for the months ahead. For example, in stead of writing the goal, “I will be a better listener,” have children write, “I will restate directions given to an adult, peer or self.” This goal is focused on a specific behavior.
