As we move closer to the first day of school, it is common for some parents to feel overwhelmed or anxious about the new school year. Through productive home-school communication and collaboration at the Kindergarten Center, we will work together to support each child’s development socially, emotionally, and academically.
Below are some previously shared suggestions to help parents/guardians prepare their child for the start of the school year.
- Promote Independence: Students should independently be able to use the bathroom, fasten and unfasten clothing, open and close containers (lunch items), carry a backpack, exit a car independently.
- Develop Social and Emotional Skills: Provide opportunities for your child to engage with other children and grown ups.
- Are they able to state their first and last name?
- Do they follow directions the first time they are told?
- Do they react appropriately when they lose a game or if it is played in a different manner?
- Can they identify and communicate their needs (bathroom, hungry, thirsty) or emotions?
- Can they wait their turn and take turns?
If you have answered no to any of these questions, use the next few weeks to practice and develop these skills.
- Don’t Procrastinate: Become familiar with the Kindergarten Center by checking out the website, the school and district calendar, and review the school supply list.
