In Mr. Melfa’s second-grade Physical Education, students participate in a student-centered lesson that blends physical activity with meaningful skill development. During this class, students rotate through a variety of stations where they are given a general goal, while also having the freedom to make their own decisions.
At the game stations, students collaborate to decide how they want to play—whether that means creating their own rules for scoring points or choosing to play simply for enjoyment. At the building stations, students work together to design and construct structures of their choice, encouraging creativity and shared problem-solving.
Throughout the lesson, students actively demonstrate key Rutherford Profile of a Graduate competencies, including critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Students think critically as they plan strategies and solve challenges, collaborate as they work with peers and share responsibilities, and communicate effectively as they explain ideas, listen to others, and reach group agreements.
This engaging approach empowers students to take ownership of their learning while building confidence, teamwork, and essential skills that support their growth both in and out of the gym.
