On Wednesday, October 9, a team of security professionals observed lockdown/active shooter drills at selected schools in the District. Observers were from the New Jersey Department of Education Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the New Jersey State Police, the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management, and the Rutherford Police Department. Following each drill, an extensive debriefing took place. This exercise was a learning experience and not an evaluation, but the District was commended for its plan and the teachers, staff, and students were commended for how the plans were implemented. The exercise was a very valuable activity and is part of our ongoing focus on school safety.
