Superintendent Jack Hurley was named Bergen County Superintendent of the Year by the Bergen County Association of School Administrators. Mr. Hurley received the award at the BCASA’s May 9 meeting.
Mr. Hurley has been Superintendent of Rutherford Public Schools since 2014. He started his RPS career in 1977 as an English teacher, and was assistant principal and then principal of the high school before being appointed to his current role.
During his time as superintendent, Mr. Hurley has overseen major academic initiatives. In the area of early childhood education, he implemented a preschool program and full-day kindergarten, and boosted academics and athletics at the high school by increasing the number of Advanced Placement courses, refurbishing the high school field and adding a lacrosse program.
Special education programming also has expanded under Mr. Hurley’s watch. He established a special education program in the district that includes preschool, self-contained classes and the Bulldog Academy program for ages 18 to 21.
District-wide, Mr. Hurley oversaw a reconfiguration of district schools that included a middle school, and a 2019 bond referendum that provided funding for seven facilities projects in five schools.
Mr. Hurley was nominated as Bergen County Superintendent of the Year from among the county’s 71 school districts, and chosen for the honor by a Bergen County Association of School Administrators selection committee.
