Today in advisory we discussed diversity and the difference between acceptance and tolerance. Seventh grade students, through video, discussion, and songs, identified how we perceive bias and prejudice and the steps we can take to stop the cycle. Eighth grade students, through the presentation of two unique stories, learned that tolerating others is not a positive reaction to diversity. Instead they identified acceptance as our ability to “see” others, even if we don’t 100% percent agree with them. Acceptance means that even though we might have profound differences, we can still respect each other.
