Bus Eligibility Requests

Bus Eligibility Requests for Students Attending Union and Pierrepont Schools

Transportation shall be provided to public school students who reside remote from their assigned school of attendance, nonpublic school students who reside remote from their school of attendance and meet the eligibility criteria of N.J.A.C. 6A:27-2.2, and special education students who reside remote from their assigned school or who require transportation services in accordance with their Individual Education Program (IEP). In some cases, aid in lieu of transportation may be provided.

The words “remote from the school of attendance” shall mean beyond two and one half miles via the shortest distance for high school students (grades nine through 12) and beyond two miles via the shortest distance for elementary school students (grades preschool through eight). By NJ State Law, a student can walk up to and including these distances. For the purposes of determining eligibility for student transportation, measurement shall be made by the shortest route along public roadways or public walkways from the entrance of the student’s residence nearest such public roadway or public walkway to the nearest public entrance of the school which the student attends.

Pierrepont and Union School students who live beyond two miles (shortest route) from the school they attend are eligible for busing.

Before a student qualifies for busing, New Jersey State Code mandates accurate determination of door to door distance the student must walk. Persons with concerns regarding busing from an address should call Anthony Paterno, Director of Buildings and Grounds at 201 438 7675 ext. 4117.

Mileage Checks:
Although not always accurate for these purposes, a quick check of your home to school mileage can be made on MapQuest. Please make sure that you have selected “shortest walking distance” within the Program options and have used the correct school address. Please submit Mileage Check Request and a letter requesting busing to:

Rhonda Sabatini, Secretary to the Director of Buildings and Grounds
70 E. Pierrepont Avenue
Rutherford, NJ 07070

Procedure:
Mileage checks will be verified by the Buildings and Grounds Department.

Once the Mileage Check is completed, the Buildings and Grounds Department will send you a written response indicating the mileage, your eligibility status, and bus transportation option. Questions regarding the route taken, actual measurements, or measurement procedure should be addressed to the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
