To celebrate the conclusion of their class novel, Wishtree<\/em> by Katherine Applegate, Mrs. Cirilli-Percontino\u2019s 4th-grade classroom hosted their very own “Wishing Day!” Just like Red, the wise oak narrator, students explored the power of community, empathy, and hope.<\/span><\/p>\n

This classroom activity is a powerful vehicle that incorporates the 6 competencies of PORG. The competency of Character is at the core of the activity. By reading Wishtree, students analyze themes of empathy, inclusion, and kindness. Drafting their own wishes allows them to reflect on their personal values, their aspirations for others, and the courage it takes to be an upstander in their community. They are literally “rooting” their character growth in the physical act of making a wish for the greater good.<\/span><\/p>\n

The concept of a “Wish Tree” is a beautiful, global tradition that spans many cultures. Historically, people have sought out special trees\u2014often ancient or sacred\u2014to leave offerings or tie ribbons and tags onto branches.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just like in the novel, this classroom tree serves as a physical representation of the students\u2019 collective optimism and growth.<\/span><\/p>\n
