All the students in second grade participated in an election unit. Students selected two issues of interest: second snack and extra recess time. \u00a0Students under the guidance of their teachers researched the issues noting positive and negatives of each issue. \u00a0Students then wrote and presented persuasive speeches to their peers in an effort to gather votes for their given issue. \u00a0Second graders even made posters and displayed them throughout the building to get some of the undecided voters to vote for their cause. \u00a0Teachers then set up a polling site and students exercised their right to vote! \u00a0Mr. Hurley and Dr. Velechko voted as well and hoped their votes did not cause a contested election. \u00a0In the end SECOND SNACK was the winner! \u00a0The real winners were the students who experienced democracy at work.<\/p>\n
